Columbus, IN. The Columbus Area Arts Council is pleased to announce the 2015–2016 Old National Bank First Fridays for Families season.
First Fridays for Families is a free program geared toward children in pre-kindergarten through third grade. All First Fridays for Families performances begin at 6 PM on the first Friday of each month from November through April and are held in the Nugent-Custer Performance Hall in The Commons in downtown Columbus. Karen Shrode, Executive Director of the Arts Council, said, “This year we celebrate our 27th season! First Fridays is one of our most successful and beloved programs. We delight in welcoming everyone to the performances—from first time attendees to audience members who attended First Fridays years ago as children and are now returning with their own children. There’s no better way to introduce young audiences to live performance and we are ever grateful to our title sponsor, Old National Bank, for eliminating cost barriers and keeping this program admission-free.”
The 2015–2016 line-up is as follows:
Friday, November 6, 2015: Magician NICK LAKIN isn’t your typical magician. As a multi-award winning magician, his style of magic combines situation comedy with hilarious theatrics that will have children and adults laughing and talking about the show long after it’s over.
Friday, December 4, 2015: Musician DAVE RUDOLF brings a holiday show that will have kids twisting to the “Candy Cane Twist” and hula hooping to “Santa’s Got a Zoot Suit.” The audience will enjoy some traditional holiday tunes and parodies such as “Oh Come, Oh Come, I Read the Manual,” “Frosty the Slow Man” and lots of other Yuletide spoofs.
Friday, January 8, 2016: (SECOND FRIDAY) BONGO BOY DRUM CIRCLE. Drum to a different beat at this community drum circle. This is an interactive experience where participants learn how to play simple beats on drums in unison. The drum circle is an atmosphere that helps to encourage creativity and a sense of wonder about music and the arts. Everyone is welcome regardless of musical ability or drumming knowledge.
Friday, February 5, 2016: HASTEY PUDDING PUPPETS “BY GEORGE AND EVERYONE ELSE”. Join us for this left-handed salute to American history that would give Martha Washington a migraine. Come face to face with the people who made our country what it is today. Ben Franklin flies his kite on stage, George Washington sports his famous wooden smile, and Betsy Ross puts the first flag together before the wondering eyes of the audience.
Friday, March 4, 2016: HENNY PENNY. ArtReach, the touring arm of the Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, performs a work based on the original folktale about the hen who is convinced the sky is falling. This delightful adventure has a strong message about self confidence, teamwork and friendship.
Friday, April 1, 2016: THE JUNGLE BOOK. Enjoy Dancers Studio’s production of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. This classic story is a thrilling, adventure-filled journey with the boy Mowgli as he makes his way to the village with Bagheera, the wise panther. Along the way he meets jazzy King Louie, the hypnotic snake Kaa, and the lovable happy-go-lucky bear Baloo who teaches Mowgli “The Bare Necessities” of life and the true meaning of friendship.
