Alex and TiborAlex Star, a first generation survivor, and his nephew, Tibor Klopfer, a second generation survivor, put a human face on events and statistics of WW II by recounting experiences of their Hungarian Jewish family. Alex was a young teen when war broke out and for a while hid out in the countryside until he was captured and sent to labor camps. In July of 1944, Tibor’s mother (Alex’s older sister), was deported from a rural ghetto in Hungary to Auschwitz-Birkenau.  She was liberated at the end of the war from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Tibor’s father lost all of his immediate family including his first wife and two daughters. He spent much of the war in Hungarian and German forced labor camps before being liberated from Dachau at the end of the war. Our speakers come to us through the Bureau of Jewish Education in Indianapolis.
