Just like you can’t believe everything you hear, you can’t believe everything you read. Especially online. Almost 80% of people read online reviews for things (gadgets, gizmos, hotels, restaurants), but as many as 20% of those reviews were written by someone who never ate at, stayed in or used the product. More than 30% of people who have written fake review said they did it because they “felt like it.” Other excuses were they were writing on someone else’s behalf (23%), not liking the idea of a product (22%), not liking the manufacturer or service provider (19%) and for a laugh (10%). The funniest one of those I’ve ever read was for a banana slicer and it was written from the perspective of a woman whose husband had cheated on her. Knowing how much that would upset someone, I couldn’t tell if it was real or fake.
