COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) introduced a fresh new face Monday morning. At Columbus City Hall, Mayor Jim Lienhoop swore in Nicholas Todd Schmitt as the city’s latest police officer.

Schmitt is 22 years old and was born in Cincinnati. After completing high school, he graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in both Chemistry and Criminal Justice. He is also a graduate of the 45th Class of the Indiana University Police Academy, an Eagle Scout, and a PADI Rescue Scuba Diver.

The young recruit’s family features a long line of law enforcement officers. His father is a special agent for the FBI, a grandfather is a former mayor and police chief in Jasper, Indiana, and an uncle is a mounted officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Schmitt now begins an orientation period at CPD and continues on to the department’s field training program.
