Top 3 Things: Small Talk Edition

Some advice from your friendly neighborhood Joanna…and The Huffington Post. They posted an article a few days ago outlining 12 questions you should never ask within the first 5 minutes of meeting someone. There are some pretty common sense ones on this list. For example, stay away from questions about religion or politics. So I’ve narrowed them down to the 3 I think are the most helpful.

Here are the Top 3 things you shouldn’t say during a small-talk-type conversation:

#3 “What do you do?” Be more specific please. Do you mean for work? When there’s an earthquake? What?

#2 “How are you still single?” NO!!! You may think this is a compliment to the person you’re talking to. It’s not.

#1 “What’s your name again?” Just plain awkward. Try to repeat their name when they first tell it to you to help you remember. Few things are worse than having a conversation with someone and thinking you’ve made a connection and they can’t even remember your name. Don’t be that person.

Have you gotten into some awkward small talk conversations?

A majority of my growing up years were spent in Wanamaker, a small town just barely inside Franklin Township. Two of my neighbors were corn fields so my two sisters, younger brother, and I got into lots of trouble. I'm a proud Greyhound and graduate from the University of Indianapolis. I've worked for a few other stations throughout Indianapolis, collected a few awards along the way, and here I am! When I'm not at work, you can assume I'm with my family, reading a comic book, consuming too much TV and movies for one single person, trying to find time to volunteer, or snuggling one of my five pets (3 cats, 2 dogs.
