EDINBURGH, Ind. – Edinburgh Fire and Rescue has given a makeover to the town’s fire hydrants, thanks to a project spearheaded by the Edinburgh Water Department. They were repainted and are now color-coded to specifications suggested by the National Fire Protection Association.
Although the basic color is bright yellow, the “caps” on the hydrants have four different colors to help firefighters identify an individual hydrant’s flow before choosing it to establish a water supply. A blue accent color means the hydrant has a very good flow of water; green equals a good flow for residential areas; orange designates marginally adequate; and, red means inadequate.
The Edinburgh hydrants had previously been painted red, which is a difficult color for firefighters to see at night.
