COLUMBUS, Ind. – As a result of the winter storm that blew through Columbus on Thursday night and Friday morning, the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and Indiana State Police say that some roadways developed frozen spots and became extremely hazardous.
Several slide-offs and crashes were reported as temperatures dropped 30 degrees in two hours. The travel status has been upgraded to a “Watch” level and officials ask that you only travel if absolutely necessary.
Road conditions deteriorated overnight. Winds are also impacting visibility so if you have to be on the road, use caution and allow extra time to reach your destination.
If you must be out traveling, BCSO reminds you to dress in layers and to make sure to have a vehicle emergency kit with you that includes extra blankets, bottled water, snacks, and jumper cables.
A Travel Watch means that conditions are present that are threatening to the safety of the public. ISP says that during a local “Travel Watch” advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.
