COLUMBUS, Ind. – A Shelby County man has been arrested after a car chase ended with the suspect crashing his vehicle into a pond on Friday afternoon.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) stopped a car operated by Benjamin Munn, 48, of Flat Rock, for a traffic violation near State Road 46 and E State St., at around 3:15 p.m., per BCSO Det. Dane Duke.

The driver had an active Shelby County warrant for failure to appear on the charge of unlawful firearm possession by a serious violent felon The charge stemmed from a 2012 voluntary manslaughter conviction in Brown County.

After initially pulling over, Munn then allegedly ignored orders to exit his car and sped away. BCSO pursued the suspect until he left the roadway near Taylor Road and Waycross Drive and crashed into a pond in the Sandy Hook neighborhood.

Law enforcement says Munn was taken into custody and faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and the outstanding Shelby County warrant.

The Bartholomew County Water Rescue Dive Team and Indiana DNR conservation officers were called to the scene to recover the vehicle from the pond, which took several hours.
