FRANKLIN, Ind. – With election season in full swing, the Johnson County Sheriff’s and Prosecutor’s Offices remind residents that the theft or destruction of political signage is a crime under Indiana law.

Political signs, a crucial part of the democratic process, can be expensive, and tampering with them is illegal. Anyone caught stealing or tampering with them could be subject to criminal charges, including fines and potential jail time.

“Theft of political signs, or any property for that matter, will not be tolerated in Johnson County,” said Sheriff Duane E. Burgess. “We encourage our residents to respect the rights and property of others. You will face legal consequences if caught taking or damaging signs.”

Prosecutor Lance Hamner added, “The Prosecutor’s Office supports our Sheriff and other local law enforcement officers in ensuring your safety and protecting your rights, including displaying political signs. We will prosecute any theft or vandalism related to the political process.”

If you witness the theft or damage of political signs, you are asked to report it to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office immediately.
