GREENWOOD, Ind. – A jury in Johnson County has convicted a Greenwood man of murder in connection with the shooting death of his father in Old Town in 2023.
Jacob Michael Moran, 23, was found guilty Friday on all counts related to the fatal shooting of his father, 45-year-old Shaun M. Moran, on August 28, 2023. His charges included one count of murder, two counts of domestic battery in the presence of a child under 16 years old (Level 6 felony), two counts of intimidation (Level 6 felony and Class A misdemeanor,) and criminal trespass (Class A misdemeanor). Prosecutors alleged that he assaulted and subsequently shot his father.
Jacob Moran had been residing at his father’s residence but was reportedly causing disturbances, which led to a request for him to vacate the premises. Following this initial request, Jacob Moran allegedly assaulted his father, prompting the involvement of law enforcement. Later that same day, he returned and reportedly assaulted Shaun Moran once more, as indicated in court documents.
A few hours later, Jacob Moran returned for a third time, allegedly armed with a firearm. He purportedly informed his mother that he had observed Shaun Moran rummaging through his possessions in the garage and confronted him about it. After his father allegedly made a derogatory remark, Jacob Moran is said to have shot his father through a window, according to court records.
Jacob Moran is scheduled to receive his sentence on January 10. The offense of murder is subject to a penalty ranging from 45 to 65 years. Additionally, there will be a hearing regarding a firearms enhancement related to the murder charge, which may impose an extra penalty of 5 to 20 years.
