EDINBURGH, Ind. – Camp Atterbury, in Edinburgh, will be hosting an AC-130J Ghostrider aircraft for aerial gunnery training next week. You will be able to see this beast as it trains on Thursday, December 28, from noon to 6 p.m.
The training will focus on the 105mm howitzer and the 30mm minigun. If you see this U.S. Air Force AC-130J Ghostrider making 45° banks around Camp Atterbury and unleashing controlled fury, do not be alarmed as it is your service members honing their skills.
The fifth-generation AC-130J gunship is replacing the aging AC-130U/W fleet. AC-130 gunships have been used in U.S. combat for almost 60 years, since the Vietnam War.
The AC-130J aircraft, which cost $165 million each, was named Ghostrider in May 2012. The first of its kind completed developmental test and evaluation in June 2015. Full operational capability is forecast for 2025.
