NORTH VERNON, Ind. – A 30-year-old Jennings County man was arrested on murder and other related charges on Sunday night after a joint investigation by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police (ISP) into the death of his 53-year-old father.

Jennings County Sheriff’s deputies, North Vernon Police officers, and ISP troopers responded to the 4000 Block of East Private Road 450S in southern Jennings County at 10 p.m., after receiving reports of shots being fired.

Law enforcement found a deceased male, who had been shot, lying outside the residence. He was identified as Robert “Matthew” Montgomery.

Officers were able to coax the suspect, Conner M. Montgomery, 30, of North Vernon, to exit the home and he was taken into custody.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Conner, the son, was at the residence with an adult female and two children when an altercation occurred. While inside the house, Conner Montgomery pointed a gun at the woman and allegedly fired it. The female tried to leave but Conner shot her vehicle, disabling it.

Robert Montgomery, the father, was called to come to the scene before police arrived. Conner supposedly shot him while he stood outside of the home.

Conner Montgomery was arrested on initial charges of murder, criminal confinement with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, domestic battery (in the presence of minors), neglect of a dependent, and pointing a firearm. He was incarcerated at Jennings County Jail pending an initial appearance in the Jennings County Circuit Court.
