EDINBURGH, Ind. – The Edinburgh Police Department (EPD) and Edinburgh Fire and Rescue responded to 480 Prosser Dr., on Wednesday evening, after a report of an accidental shooting. Upon arrival, police say they found a 33-year-old female with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Authorities say an off-duty EPD officer with three years of service was cleaning his personal handgun, did not realize that there was a live round in the chamber, and discharged the weapon. The female was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital and is in stable condition.

The incident is reportedly being investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
